Though somewhat lengthy, that was a very worthwhile read. I am quite
familiar with the history of Unix, and though incomplete for the sake of
brevity, the history given is accurate.
I believe that it may be helpful to provide some evidence in support of
the claim "The open-source community encompasses more man-centuries of
Unix architectural experience than SCO (or even the vastly larger IBM)
could ever dream of hiring."
Wouldn't it be interesting if we could prove this.
To do this simply, I would suggest that someone (I would be happy to)
collect emails from everyone interested, which states their years of
architectural experience with Unix or Unix-patterned (Unix-like)
operating systems. Please note that the claim is that architectural
experience is had, not necessarily used.
Also asserted is that this experience is encompassed by the open-source
community. Therefore, it would be beneficial to provide the year in
which the experienced began their association with the open-source
community.
Lastly, to make the evidence stand in court, each submission could be
digitally signed. Submissions which are not signed may still be useful,
but the more signed submissions the better.
Here is a form that could be used:
Name: [place your name here, i.e. Robert Oldham]
Years of Unix architectural experience: [place number of years here,
i.e. 9]
Year beginning association with open-source community: [place year here,
1997]
Thanks,
Robert
