Surprised and Disappointed

I gotta disagree on this. I enjoy using linux for a variety of reasons,
but I haven't had the experience that most things "just work" -- even
in the newer versions of the bigger distros. Many things "just work,"
but I wouldn't say most. One has only to view the relatively large
amount of traffic among relatively small groups of people on linux
mailing lists such as this to know that this is true.

While the distros are definitely improving, I have yet to see one that
even installed without either a)experiencing a problem that required
me to edit a conf file or b) requiring me to know some fairly specific
information about my hardware, software, file system, etc. I love
linux's stability, flexibility, openness and price -- but it still has
some distance to travel before it meets the "just works" measurement.
