Chuck,
We meet again. You know I'm not the best person in the world to help but
I'm home on a Saturday doing nothing else. I have < 1 year with Linux. But
as a bit of a newbie myself I can assure you that the learning curve mellows
out and you will find that it is VERY rewarding in the end.
As for you sound card...
It seems that the "hacker types" can get just about any hardware working.
With newbies the answer might not be as sexy as hacking the kernel but more
practical like run the latest version of you favorite distro. I had nic and
usb problems on my laptop with RH 8.0 but when I moved to 9 the problems
were gone. I'm not suggesting that you stay away from tweak things on your
system to get them working, just that sometimes when there are so many other
things for a newbie to do, you might let the distro do as much of the work
as possible. Linux is in rapid development and 6 months can make a
difference.
when it comes to hardware support, I have never had a problem with sound
cards. I know the older hardware is where Linux really shines. If all you
need is a "plain Jane" sound card that works, I have a few just laying
around. I'm sure one will work. Let me know. I also have RH9 disks.
Again good luck,
Gabriel
