All good points. May I add two more:

* Practice with a throw-away testbed machine first. That way, if you
  have problems, the public server is unaffected.

* Upgrade one service at a time, and give it a reasonable period in
  between (say several days) to be sure it is working correctly. This
  will help to isolate problems.
