Linux isn't about catering to other people's needs, it's about catering
to one's own needs. I use linux not because Linus adds features for me,
but because I have the freedom of choosing my own features.

Again, it shouldn't be about talking down to anyone, but rather helping
them discover their own usefulness in the OS. People are free to choose
linux and make it their own or not. Those who make linux their own are
usually the ones that succeed in using it and those who don't, end up
despising nor completely misunderstanding open source solutions.
It might help if you teach your son not to have expectations about
things. Did he have any expectations when he first started using
Windows? Try to instill the inquisitive and exploratory spirit that he
had when first learning how to use Windows and he will use and enjoy
linux much more.
I hope this comes out right...
Andy
