I second this.
We need to promote Linux. That includes email and all that goes with
using a computer. My kids were not turned off of Linux because of
Linux.
They stopped using it because of too many Traditionalist "Techies".
My son who is very computer literate, didn't like feeling like people
were talking down to him. He also expected to be able to do all those
things that he was use to. He was told to change and that was just
how it was to be.
Again, I agree. It is not a matter of should or should not. It is a
matter of the users. I for one appreciate Sasha's position. I have
been
there myself, but I also know that I have other requirements that
preclude
having the prefect settings for this group.
I will try and accommodate those users who are text based and TRY to
remember to set my email system to text before sending any messages
to this group, but I may slip from time to time.
My only request is that we not force newbies to conform. I want Linux
to
grow.
This is my last response to this thread.
Thanks for all of the insight.
Brad
PS. I have seen several good reasons for HTML in email messages.
email me directly if you would like to discuss what they are. We can
take it offline.

I'm really struggling to understand the concept that formatting email
a particular way is a matter of "should" or "ought to be."
If somebody sends me a message formatted in html, or a file in MS
Word format, or whatever -- by what universal code of ethics do I
judge that they should or should not have done it? And who gets to
set these rules of ethics? Is it majority rule? Is it the person that
shouts the loudest? Gets the angriest? Is the geekiest? Has been in
the group the longest? The Perliest?
To me, an email message's formatting is neither moral nor immoral. Do
I get emails that are difficult to read? Sometimes. But it usually
doesn't take long for me to extract the message -- in the grand scheme
of things I am really only very slightly inconvenienced.
As I said before, I think Sasha was very repectful in his
suggestions. But I've always thought -- and perhaps I'm wrong on
this -- that PLUG's purpose was to promote linux usage, and I think
that's best accomplished by creating an inclusive atmosphere where we
encourage all people to ask and answer linux questions, regardless
of _how_ their message is formatted -- and to write really long
run-on sentences.
