I'll put in my two bits on DansGuardian too. Over all, it's a great
program and really does what it says. It's fast. The Debian packages
work perfectly without any fuss (unless you *want* to fuss, of course).
And the choice of plugging into Squid was a brilliant one. It's
wonderful too.

The drawbacks I've seen are that it doesn't allow for very complicated
ACLs. So you can't, for instance, block different URLs based on IPs or
time of day.

I also noticed that it tended to block Yahoo mail whenever I was
deleting my spam. Granted, I don't want to read about hot nude celebs,
but the subject lines often were explicit enough that I couldn't delete
the email.

Of course, I *could* go in an fix those bugs being GPL and all, but
since my son is only 11 months old, it's not really a pressing issue.

Also of interest, I've been running a Squid proxy for a couple weeks on
an old Pentium 166 w/ 64MB RAM. Even under heavy load the thing never
gets more that 10-20% utilization. That with SquidGuard for chastity
lists, and it's running Fetchmail to download all the company email. If
only my boss knew I scrapped Exchange and ISA Proxy Server...
